Castle & Shield
Project
During a study of the
Middle Ages, the sixth
grade students of Mrs.
Godlewski's World
History class learned
about Europe during
the Middle Ages
focusing on the rise
of feudalism, art,
architecture,
religion, and
way
of life. They learned
how the basic needs of
food, clothing and
shelter were met.
Students explored
castle life: who lived
in the castles and
what their jobs were.
Students had two
"creative" assignments
to complete.
1. Shield Project -
Students created an
original coat of arms
that reflected either
themselves or their
family.
2. Castle Project -
This assignment had
students consider life
in a castle. After
discussing daily life
and purposes of
castles, students
planned and built
models of a castle.
They used their
imagination and
whatever materials
they had at home to
make their castles.
The resulting
projects are displayed
in a castle fair,
showcasing the
diversity of ways in
which students
successfully fulfilled
the requirements of
the project. You can
see our projects on
the St. Joseph School
website.
